Course Syllabus - Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Engineering

Text Books:

1. Required: Hydrology and Hydraulic Systems, Fourth Edition, Gupta, ISBN 978-1-4786-3091-3 , 2017. Note: This text will also be used in CENG 140, CENG 139, and CENG 142.
2. Required: Fluid Mechanics Demystified, Potter, ISBN: 978-0071626811. 2009.
3. Recommended: An engineering fluid mechanics textbook. These are well-respected reference books:
   • Fluid Mechanics with Engineering Applications, Tenth edition, E.J. Finnemore. and J. B. Franzini, 2002, McGraw-Hill, ISBN 978-0072432022 (an excellent reference with an emphasis on civil engineering applications)
   • Fluid Mechanics, Seventh Edition, F.M. White, 2010, McGraw-Hill, ISBN 978-0077422417.

Course Description:

Fundamentals of fluid behavior with an emphasis on water. Covers basic fluid properties, flow classification, and fluid statics including forces on submerged surfaces. Introduces and applies fundamental relationships: conservations of mass, momentum, and energy. Hydraulic applications include flow in pipes and pipe netwroks, steady flow in open channels, and hydraulic machinery. Co-requisite: CENG 141L.

Course Goals:

One of the goals for this class is to foster the skills needed to be self taught learners. Not all of the information that you need to know will be presented in lecture. I will presume that you are acquiring some through your own reading and study. In addition, you will be encouraged to refine your professional style of solving problems and presenting solutions in excellent written form. Part of the homework will be dedicated to solving problems in a clear and complete professional style.

PHYS 31, CENG 41
